Third Annual Team Intestinal Fortitude Event

By: Jake Marcus

Good day all.  We are fresh off our Third Annual Auction and Raffle Event and it was definitely a success.  The event started at 6:30PM on Thursday, March 14th at Thorny Lea Country Club in Brockton, in the main ballroom.  In past years, we hosted the event at L O C O Tapas Restaurant in Easton, MA which has served us as a great venue, but as we started to reach capacity in ticket sales we opted to move to a larger venue.  Thorny Lea was definitely spacious with hightop dinner tables and a main table with hors d’ouevres.  Around the perimeter we had a DJ, who did very well, and the auction and raffle items.  We also had a slide show playing throughout the night of pictures throughout the years of our committee and other past events we’ve participated in.
There was also a table for dinner and three different bars.  We had open bar which was definitely a success.  At around 7:45PM, I gave a quick speech followed by Brian Teague, recognizing our achievements over the years.  Teague presented the award for the First Annual Man & Woman of the Year to Enid and Arnold Marcus.  The two have been involved with Crohn’s and Colitis advocacy for over forty years, including many selfless acts for their son, Stephen.  Over the past few years with Team Intestinal Fortitude, they have been active in getting donations from many companies and we’re glad to have them on the committee.
The auction and raffle went very well but the headline was a clambake with 25 people including New England Patriots Tight End, Rob Gronkowski.  By around 8:30PM the bids had gone up to about $3,500 and people were thinking of bidding even higher than that.  However, a combined bid by two friends who both were adamant about winning the prize blew everyone else’s potential bids out of the water as they put $20,500 on it.  The event is anticipated to be this May or June.  Thanks to everyone for coming out to the event and making it a wild success.  When everything was said and done with ticket sales and auction/raffle items, we ended up raising a whopping $70,000, which brings our grand total for the year to $120,000! Our record for a year is $162,000 so we are seeking to beat that in the next eight months or so.
Training for the Chicago Half Marathon for me and my mom Carol Augustyniak is going great.  She continues to walk about 4-5 days a week and I am beginning to ramp up my training as the weather begins to get better.  This weekend, Team Challenge training will be in West Newton along the Boston Marathon Course and I anticipate a lot of Marathon runners to be out on the course.  I ran Boston last year in the 90 degree heat and it didn’t go so well so I opted to sit out this year.  However, I’ll be rooting for my Stonehill friend and rugby player, Drew Jacobs, who will be running.  I’ve been coaching him along the way and giving him training tips so it is nice to still have a connection to the race.  Drew worked for the Celtics Sales team for a year and was able to donate two Celtics tickets for the auction.
Video of the event can be found at the following websites with interviews from Stephanie Weinstein and Meredith Keach’s THE SHOW as well as the speeches at the end: http://www.eastoncat.org/watch.  Thanks for reading.
